2026 is the year that I treat my lungs better. I want to be smoking for the long term, and I don’t want to end up with COPD or walking around with an oxygen tank. The timing… was impeccable. I had started my own dry herb vaping substitution routine and I would have little pangs of wanting to combust. It took a few months, but I put down the pipes that I was using before all in favor of the Maze-X pipe.

I remember the winter(s) – it’s been a multi year process with many false starts – that I decided that I was going to stop smoking bongs and just hit a spoon. My throat hated me, it was a dry winter made dryer by the fact that I had just spent the last two winters wet as a whistle under the Humboldt jetstream in Humboldt County. I think about that winter ten years ago where I gave up the bong in favor of a spoon, and I think my throat hasn’t recovered since then.

I really wish the Maze-X was around back then. I guess that’s how it goes with cool inventions, everything is hindsight – even the criticisms. My biggest criticism is simply, why did this take so long? Carbon filtration has come a long way over the last few decades, and I do feel products like this were inevitable. Just happy they finally arrived.

Carbon filtered Maze-X hits smack in a different way

My first experience with a carbon filter was in the form of an ash catcher that my college friend bought for his bong. I remember there being a lot of activated carbon granules, and we weren’t exactly sure how often to replace it. The ash got into the part of the device where the activated carbon granules were, resulting in an instantly assy and ashy taste by hit number 2.

Carbon filters didn’t hit the weed scene until the end of the 20th century, and they didn’t hit the mainstream until the 21st century. I should get off my high horse, and just appreciate the fact that pipes are back with a future form factor.

Metal pipes were all the rage before glass pipes and spoons became the default cheapest piece you could buy. If anything, the plethora of glass spoons available for $5 cheapened the dry pipe smoking experience. Sure, stoners like to envision themselves as Gandalf with the big pipe, but pipes with that form factor are actually pretty rare because glass stems that thin are prone to breaking.

I’ve come to think of the Weedgets Maze-X as a modern sebsi, a protopipe with a line of intestines, a maze really, that provides straight filtration even before the carbon filter is hit. The two together really do cool the smoke in a way that you won’t have ever experienced before from a pipe this size.

When there’s a carbon filter, you have to pull differently. The same way as those that roll joints with carbon filters learn to pull differently to account for the resistance, so too do Maze-X pipe users become accustomed over time. The smoke is cool enough that you won’t burn yourself no matter how hard you pull, but the flavor is smoothest at a certain level of airflow that takes getting used to.

First Experiences with the Weedgets Maze-X Pipe

I don’t think my lungs benefitted. The first time I read about the Maze-X pipe, I thought about that winter… and how things might be different for me now if the Maze-X had been out back then.

That was the era of the very first Pax, the very first dab pens, digital volcanos, and so much innovation… but none of that innovation touched the most basic and sacred form of cannabis consumption: combustion.

I haven’t really seen any innovation in pipes during those years besides the Helix dry pipe, where a few well placed holes cause the smoke to vortex between the fire, the weed in the bowl, and the smoker’s mouth. I loved the amount of cooling that that provided, maybe it provided a little bit of filtration as well… but I doubt it.

The Maze-X was really something that I looked forward to receiving between learning about it and getting to try it. That hasn’t happened in a long while in the cannabis space – and that usually only happens for flower or rosin or hashish – not smoking accessories.

As I mentioned in the intro, I’ve been on a personal journey to even out my consumption. Combustion used to be my preferred method, but I’ve incorporated vaporization more and more in what I’ve noticed is a trend that almost all smokers eventually reach – whether they’re tobacco smokers or cannabis smokers. The Maze-X is my backup combustion device – just because of where I am in my life right now. I hear that many people use it as a primary.

I don’t combust in public the way that I used to. With CA laws on that matter not as permissive as say in OK or NY, it’s sometimes safer just to vape than it is to combust. Or maybe it’s all in my head. Anyways, the

The age that this happens varies, but I’ve seen it happen as early as the 30s for many people at least in the United States. Certainly, by average retirement age, smokers are seeking healthier smoking options whether on their own or at the behest of their doctor(s).

Maybe you’ve seen Dr. Dre in the song Last Dance with Mary Jane. I laughed, then thought deep thoughts. I’m not ready for my last dance with mary jane, and I see this Weedgets Maze-X pipe as an obvious way to extend my time on the dance floor.
