Cannabis culture has been around long enough to develop its own folklore. Some of it is harmless. Some of it is useful. And some of it is just wrong, repeated so many times for so many decades that it became "common knowledge" without ever being true.
If you've been smoking for years, you've probably heard most of these. Some of them you might still believe. Here are five that won't go away, and the actual truth behind each one.
Myth 1: "If you cough, you get higher"
This is the big one. It's the myth that gives smokers permission to dismiss harshness as a feature instead of a problem. The logic goes that coughing forces more THC into your bloodstream, so the harsher the hit, the better the high.
It's not true.
When you cough hard, what's actually happening is a brief drop in oxygen to the brain. That oxygen drop creates a momentary lightheaded sensation that can feel like a spike in your high, especially if the THC is already kicking in. Your brain interprets that lightheadedness as an intensification of the experience.
But it's not more THC reaching your system. It's less oxygen. The "extra high" feeling is closer to a brief mini-fainting episode than enhanced absorption. THC absorption happens through your lungs at a rate determined by surface area and exposure time, not by how violently your body reacts to the smoke.
So when you cough through a hit, you're not getting higher. You're just temporarily oxygen-deprived. The actual cause of the cough (hot, irritating, particle-heavy smoke) is the thing causing damage, not the thing producing the high.
The smoothest hit and the harshest hit deliver the same amount of THC. The only difference is what your throat goes through to get it.
Myth 2: "Glass pipes are always the safest"
Glass has a great reputation, and it deserves most of it. Borosilicate glass is non-reactive, doesn't off-gas anything, and produces some of the purest-tasting smoke available. For the bowl (the part that holds the burning flower), there's almost nothing better.
But the myth is that glass is universally the safest, which leads people to assume any glass pipe is automatically a good choice. That's not quite right.
Cheap glass pipes are often made with lower-quality glass that's not actually borosilicate. They can contain trace minerals, lead-based paint on decorative elements, or low-grade glass that releases compounds when heated repeatedly. The "glass is safe" assumption only holds for high-quality glass from reputable sources.
Glass also has serious downsides as a complete pipe material. It's fragile. It conducts heat poorly, which means the smoke stays hot all the way through the pipe and reaches your throat at nearly combustion temperature. And once the bowl gets resin-coated (which happens fast), glass pipes are notoriously hard to clean thoroughly.
The actual safest setup uses glass where it matters most (the bowl, where flame meets flower) combined with other materials that handle different jobs better. A properly designed pipe might use borosilicate glass for the bowl, aircraft-grade anodized aluminum for the body (which dissipates heat as the smoke travels through), and medical-grade silicone for the mouthpiece. No single material does everything well.
Myth 3: "A cleaner pipe doesn't matter, it's all the same smoke"
Some smokers actively prefer a "broken in" pipe. They believe the resin coating adds flavor or smooths things out somehow. There's even a romantic mythology around it, the idea that a pipe with character is one that's been used hard.
The reality is that resin buildup is one of the most consistent sources of harshness in any smoking session.
Resin is partially combusted plant matter mixed with tar. As it accumulates inside a pipe, it does several things, none of them good. It restricts airflow, which makes you draw harder and pull hotter smoke through. It releases its own combustion byproducts when reheated by subsequent hits. It harbors bacteria, especially in pipes that are damp or have stagnant air. And it imparts a stale, bitter taste to every hit that follows.
A clean pipe smokes noticeably smoother than a dirty one, every single time. It's not your imagination. The fresh-flower flavor comes through more clearly, the airflow is better, the combustion is cleaner, and your throat thanks you afterward.
The "broken in" pipe is a myth. What people are remembering as the smooth quality of an old favorite pipe is usually the smooth quality of having gotten used to a particular shape, weight, or routine. Not the resin layer.
Myth 4: "Holding the smoke in longer gets you higher"
This one has the same logic problem as the coughing myth. The assumption is that the longer the smoke sits in your lungs, the more THC gets absorbed. So longer holds equal stronger highs.
The science doesn't support it.
THC absorption happens almost immediately when smoke contacts the lung tissue. Studies on the rate of THC absorption through inhalation show that the vast majority of available THC is absorbed within the first one to two seconds. Holding the smoke for ten seconds, or twenty seconds, or thirty seconds doesn't measurably increase how much THC reaches your bloodstream.
What it does do is increase how much tar, resin, and combustion byproducts get deposited in your lungs. Holding harsh smoke in your respiratory system for an extended period gives those harmful compounds more time to settle and bind to lung tissue. You're not getting more high. You're just doing more damage.
Like the coughing myth, holding can produce a lightheaded feeling that gets misinterpreted as an enhanced high. It's the same oxygen reduction effect. Less oxygen, brief dizziness, perceived as "feeling higher."
The smarter approach is a normal exhale. Take the hit, let the absorption happen in the natural one to two second window, and breathe out. You're not losing potency. You're just sparing your lungs.
Myth 5: "Smoking can't really be made safer, you're either smoking or not"
This might be the most quietly damaging myth on the list. It's the assumption that smoking is a binary, that the experience is fundamentally what it is, and that any improvements are marginal. The implication is that if you want to reduce harm, you should just quit, or switch to edibles, or vape.
That framing skips a huge middle ground.
Smoking can absolutely be made meaningfully safer and meaningfully smoother without giving up the ritual. The differences between smoking through different setups are not marginal. They're substantial.
Cooling the smoke before it reaches your throat reduces irritation directly. Engineered cooling pathways inside a pipe can drop smoke temperature significantly between combustion and inhalation. Filtering the smoke through activated carbon traps tar, resin particles, and combustion byproducts at the molecular level while letting cannabinoids and terpenes pass through. Combining these two approaches produces a session that feels fundamentally different from smoking through a basic glass pipe or rolled paper.
The Maze-X Pipe was designed by a medical device engineer specifically to address these issues. It's the only cannabis pipe officially endorsed by the American Cannabis Nurses Association, who tested it for use by patients with sensitive lungs. The Carbon-X activated carbon filter system adds another layer of filtration that fits directly into the Maze-X, the X7, and the X5. For pre-roll smokers, Smoovs cones come with Carbon-X filtration already built into the cone.
None of this is about quitting or switching to a different consumption method. It's about smoking smarter. The harm reduction is real, the smoothness improvement is dramatic, and the high stays the same.
The bottom line
Myths persist in cannabis culture because they sound right. They get repeated by people who heard them from someone else, who heard them from someone else, all the way back to a time when nobody really had data on any of this.
But the reality is that smoothness, comfort, and harm reduction aren't enemies of getting high. They're compatible with everything you want from a session. The harshness, the coughing, the throat burn, the chest heaviness, none of it is necessary or doing anything for you. It's all just unnecessary friction that the right setup can largely eliminate.
The folklore was wrong. The smoke can be smoother, the cough can be gone, and the high can be exactly what it always was.
Carbon-X activated carbon filters are compatible with the Maze-X Pipe, X7 One-Hitter, and X5 One-Hitter. Smoovs pre-roll cones include integrated Carbon-X filtration built in. The Maze-X Pipe is officially endorsed by the American Cannabis Nurses Association.

"The best cannabis delivery device! I have spent thousands of dollars on various cannabis delivery devices for the many different forms available today. This incredible device provides the smoothest smoke with the most efficient burn leading to most pleasant buzz. No other device or type is needed. They are all a waste of time and money. The maze X is the only device a cannabis user will ever need."

"Best little 'whatchamacallit' in recent history. I bought the starter kit and I gotta say, the small and medium are just incredible. The small one works great with regular joints. I have been experimenting with cannagars recently and have been making 'cigarillo' sized cannagers and the medium tip is just the perfect size for it. I plan to start making fatter cannagars shortly and I believe the large will be just right for the largers sized ones. The extra large, I'm not quite sure I'll find a need for it as it is really quite large. I assume, as the pictures show, that the extra large tip would work great on some pipes and possibly small bongs. Really a great little gizmo."
