Why Is It Dangerous For Pets to Get High?

While cannabis may feel relaxing or euphoric for some humans, the same can’t be said for our pets. Dogs and cats don’t understand the altered sensations THC causes, all they know is they feel scared, disoriented, or physically unwell. Their bodies metabolize THC differently, which can make the effects even more intense. In large enough doses, cannabis exposure can lead to tremors, seizures, dangerously low heart rate, coma, or even death in rare cases (ASPCA, 2025).

Cannabis isn’t a party for pets, it can be a medical emergency.

Although online videos of “high” dogs or cats may seem funny or cute to some, the reality is much darker. Pets experiencing THC toxicity are not having a good time, they’re scared, sick, and vulnerable. Intentionally exposing animals to cannabis isn’t harmless entertainment: it’s neglectful at best, and abusive at worst.

What To Do If Your Pet Gets High?

If you suspect your dog or cat has ingested cannabis or been exposed to THC, staying calm and acting quickly is key. Observe your pet closely for signs like wobbliness, excessive drooling, vomiting, or unusual lethargy. Keep your pet in a quiet, safe space where they can rest comfortably away from stairs or hazards.

Do not try to induce vomiting or give any human medications unless instructed directly by a veterinary professional. Make note of what your pet consumed, how much, and when as this will help the vet to assess the situation.

While waiting for professional advice or on your way to the vet, ensure your pet stays hydrated but avoid forcing water. If your pet shows severe symptoms like seizures, difficulty breathing, unresponsiveness, seek emergency care immediately.

Remember this always when it comes to your pets health, a quick response can make a major difference in your pet’s recovery.

How to Keep Your Cannabis Out of Paw’s Reach

Keeping your stash safe from curious noses and paws is one of the best ways to prevent cannabis toxicity and protect your pets. Here are some simple tips to pet-proof your cannabis:

  • Store cannabis products securely: Use airtight containers with child-proof and pet-proof lids. Keep them in high cabinets or locked boxes that your pet can’t access.
  • Be extra cautious with edibles: As previously mentioned, edibles often contain ingredients like chocolate or xylitol. These ingredients are highly toxic to pets making them even more dangerous. Treat edibles like medicine and store them separately from other cannabis products.
  • Don’t leave vaping devices or loose flower out: Vape pens, cartridges, and loose cannabis can all attract curious pets. Keep them out of reach and turn off devices when not in use.
  • Be mindful of smoke and residue: Pets can be affected by secondhand smoke or cannabis residue on furniture or clothes, so smoke outside and wash your hands afterwards.
  • Educate family and visitors: Make sure everyone in the household is aware of the dangers and understands the importance of keeping cannabis away from pets, especially guests who may be unfamiliar.

By staying vigilant and keeping your cannabis stash secure, you can enjoy your relaxation time without worrying about your pets getting accidentally exposed.

CBD For Pets: Helpful or Hype?

Not all cannabis compounds are created equal, and CBD is a standout. Unlike THC, CBD is non-intoxicating, which means it won’t get your pet high. In fact, many pet owners and holistic vets are turning to CBD for its potential wellness benefits, from calming anxiety to easing chronic pain.

If you're considering giving your pet CBD there are important things to keep in mind:

  • Stick with pet-specific products: Human CBD tinctures often contain ingredients like xylitol or essential oils which can be toxic to pets. Pet CBD products will clearly list the ingredients, include dosage guidance, and ideally have a certificate of analysis from a third-party lab. Holistapet and Lazarus Naturals are two well known brands that meet these guidelines.
  • Talk to your vet first: Even though CBD is widely available online and over the counter, it's important to check in with your pet’s veterinarian who understands your fur baby’s medical history, especially if they are on medication or have a history of illness.
  • Start low and slow: Dosing varies depending on your pet’s size, condition, and product strength. Start with a very low dose and monitor closely for any signs of discomfort or adverse reactions.

While more research is needed, early studies and anecdotal reports suggest that CBD may help with things like separation anxiety, arthritis, seizures, and overall stress in pets. It’s not a miracle cure, but when used appropriately it could be a helpful addition to your pets routine.

That being said, natural doesn't always mean it's safe. While CBD may offer benefits, THC remains unsafe for pets.
