What gives cannabis, marijuana, weed, pot (whatever you call it), such unique aromas? The smells and tastes of cannabis are mostly due to chemicals called terpenes.
Terpenes are naturally occurring and can be found in plants, fruits and vegetables. They're also used to make perfumes, bath and body products, and even cleaning products.
Just like how you prefer some foods over others, the same is true with cannabis. With smells ranging from gassy to earthy to floral to fruity, there’s a terpene profile for everyone.
You might be wondering why terpenes matter. Terpenes play a role in the overall effects ("the high") we experience from cannabis. They can bring about feelings of relaxation, energy, hunger, sleepiness and pain relief, just to name a few.
Terpenes are volatile, which means they are temperamental (kinda like that ex you ditched a while back). When exposed to oxygen or heat, terpenes start to exit the scene, and you are left with cannabis that smells generic, simple or “flat”. Think about what happens to a soda after you leave it out for some time, after being exposed to the air around it, the carbonation disappears and you are left with a flat soda. Sure, you can still drink it, but it’s not nearly as good.
