Research on weed and working out
While researchers have by no means studied all the ins and outs of cannabis, there have been a few studies showing cannabis’s impact on workouts. Most recently, CU Boulder conducted a study of 50 volunteers who compared their workouts, with and without cannabis.
Here are the results for cannabis’s effects on working out:

52% report cannabis being motivating
Cannabis can ease pain and inflammation
Diving deeper into the results from the study mentioned above, it was found that older adults, who may have struggled to work out before, benefit the most from cannabis use. As we age, not only do we become less motivated to workout, but it becomes harder to complete the exercises.
Pain and inflammation play a huge role when it comes to older adults’ ability to workout. Many studies have been completed showing cannabis’s ability to reduce inflammation and pain. This also explains the 78% of people who report cannabis boosting recovery.
Cannabis promotes longevity and enjoyment in workouts
Many long-distance runners are familiar with the idea of a ‘runner’s high’ – a natural euphoria that kicks in during the sweet spot of a workout. More research is currently coming out, showing that the feeling of runner’s high actually comes from endocannabinoid receptors in the brain.
That same research suggests that since THC targets the same receptors in the brain, using cannabis before a workout can jumpstart the feeling of runner’s high. For many people, this enhances the enjoyment of working out and encourages them to workout for longer.
Cannabis promotes consistency in exercise
We all want to workout. However, working out regularly and consistently is often a different matter entirely. Sticking to a regular workout schedule is one of the biggest struggles for those of us looking to increase our physical activity. The good news is that cannabis may be able to help here too.
